Officina, the upscale Italian restaurant at The Wharf, appears to be shutting down after eight years on the Southwest Waterfront.
The restaurant at 1120 Maine Ave. SW is no longer accepting reservations past Friday, Oct. 30, according to PoPville, which first reported the apparent closure on Thursday. A tipster reported to the blog that they tried to book a table for Nov. 1 and could not, writing, "They are closing their doors!!"
No official announcement has followed.
PoPville noted the restaurant's Instagram account has not posted since Aug. 28. Neither Officina nor chef Nicholas Stefanelli has issued a public statement confirming the closure or explaining the reason.
Stefanelli, who is from Washington and is of Italian and Greek descent, opened Officina in October 2018. The three-story complex featured a ground-floor cafe and Italian marketplace, a 75-seat trattoria on the second floor and a rooftop bar with views of the Potomac River.
The apparent closure follows a difficult stretch for Stefanelli's restaurant group. Officina Cafe, a sister location at 1615 L St. NW that opened in 2021, lost its downtown space in 2025, according to the Washington Business Journal.
Stefanelli then filed for personal Chapter 7 bankruptcy in February, the Washington Business Journal reported. His annual income dropped from roughly $300,000 in 2024 to $90,000 in 2025, according to federal bankruptcy records cited by the Kansas City Star. Those records showed debts of $800,000. At the time, the Business Journal reported that the operation of Stefanelli's restaurants, including Masseria and Officina, was not affected by his personal filing.
Stefanelli also runs Masseria, a Michelin-starred restaurant in the Union Market area that has held its star since opening in 2015, according to the Kansas City Star. In February, the KC Current professional women's soccer team announced Stefanelli would open an Italian restaurant on Kansas City's riverfront, his first project outside the D.C. area.
Officina is not the only restaurant to go dark at The Wharf in October. Easy Company, a wine bar that opened in early 2023, suddenly closed over the Columbus Day weekend on Oct. 11, according to Eater DC.
No public statement from Stefanelli, his Creative Food Group or The Wharf's development team has addressed what will happen to the 1120 Maine Ave. space.
