Mayor Muriel Bowser is launching a week of events to mark the 25th anniversary of the Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs.

The office, known as MOVA, was established in 2001 to connect D.C. veterans and military families with housing, employment and other services, according to a mayoral announcement. It serves as a liaison between the District government and the veteran community. U.S. Census Bureau estimates put the District's veteran population at roughly 20,000.

Four events are scheduled.

Benefits training, Nov. 5

MOVA, AARP and Legal Counsel for the Elderly will host a Veterans Benefits Training from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 899 North Capitol Street NE. The session will cover benefits eligibility and help veterans navigate available programs.

Career fair, Nov. 6

MOVA and the Department of Employment Services (DOES) will hold a career fair and networking event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 899 North Capitol Street NE. Veterans can meet employers and learn about workforce development resources.

Veterans Day concerts, Nov. 11

The D.C. Public Library and the U.S. Navy Band will present two free concerts at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G Street NW. The Sea Chanters perform at 1 p.m. and Country Current takes the stage at 3 p.m.

Anniversary celebration, Nov. 12

MOVA's 25th anniversary celebration runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at 1 Constitution Avenue NE. The event will recognize the office's history and bring together community members and partners.

Julian Purdy, director of the Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs, said in the announcement, "This anniversary is a chance to recognize how far we have come and honor the veterans who have helped shape our city."

Lamont Carey, director of the Mayor's Office of Community Affairs, said the November activities reflect the Bowser administration's commitment to connecting veterans and their families with resources and support.

The Census Bureau's 2023 American Community Survey estimated about 20,481 veterans among D.C.'s civilian adult population of roughly 543,000. That population is the audience MOVA has worked to reach over its quarter-century, helping veterans access housing assistance, employment opportunities and other services, according to the mayor's office.
