Qargo Coffee's shop at 1600 K St. NW has closed abruptly, PoPville reported Monday, Sept. 14. Both of the local chain's known D.C. locations are now dark.

The K Street shop opened "to great fanfare" in February 2024, replacing a Starbucks at the corner of 16th and K streets NW. It lasted about two and a half years. The chain's other location, at 1001 Connecticut Ave. NW near the Farragut North Metro entrance, closed in February 2025 after operating for roughly a year. A PoPville reader described that shop as "all gutted and appears done" in a February 2025 tip to the blog.

No statement from Qargo Coffee's ownership has surfaced explaining why the K Street location shut down. PoPville said it would update readers on the space's future.

Qargo is not the only coffee operator to leave the corridor. Compass Coffee, a D.C.-based chain that once ran 25 locations across the region, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2026. Co-founder Michael Haft said in a court declaration filed with the bankruptcy that "lower office usage and a reduction in federal employees severely impacted customer traffic," according to Bisnow. Compass sold substantially all of its assets to U.K.-based Caffè Nero for $4.8 million in March 2026. By August 2026, the company said in court filings that it lacked sufficient funds to pursue a reorganization plan and moved to dismiss the case.

The departures extend beyond coffee. Two blocks south of the former Qargo, Taylor Gourmet 2.0 closed its 1400 K St. NW storefront in early September 2026, PoPville reported. The sandwich shop posted a closing sign citing "major bag reasons" and directed customers to its remaining location at 1822 Jefferson Place NW.

No future tenant for 1600 K St. NW has been announced.
