Families with young children can spend Saturday mornings watering, planting, weeding and picking up trash at a one-acre Ward 8 farm, thanks to a free volunteer series that begins Saturday, Aug. 15.
The Honeycomb Project and DC Greens are hosting three Little Growers Volunteer Days at The Well at Oxon Run, 300 Valley Ave. SE. Sessions are scheduled for Aug. 15, Sept. 12 and Oct. 17. Each runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
The program pairs parents and children in groups and assigns age-appropriate farm tasks, according to DC Greens' event listing. All ages are welcome, though organizers say the work is best suited for kids five and older.
The Honeycomb Project, a Chicago-based nonprofit that expanded to Washington this year, frames its model around treating children as leaders in community problem-solving. The organization launched its D.C. programming Jan. 24 at Georgetown Day School, drawing more than 100 guests, and aims to mobilize 1,600 youth and families across the District in 2026 through partnerships with DC Greens, Children's National Hospital, Friendship Place and other local nonprofits.
The Well at Oxon Run sits inside Oxon Run Park and includes 20,000 square feet of growing space, community gathering areas and an outdoor classroom. The farm's fall harvest list features collards, kale, beets, carrots, broccoli and herbs including sage and mint. Visitors can also pick up to five pounds of fresh produce for free during the site's Evening Harvest program.
The farm has drawn recent investment. DC Greens received a $20,000 Rotary Foundation grant in July to improve pathways at the site, and Charles Rominiyi, who manages The Well for DC Greens, accepted the 2026 District Sustainability Award in April on the organization's behalf, with judges citing its community-led work at the farm.
The Little Growers sessions are free.
Street parking is available but limited; organizers encourage carpooling.
