A teenage boy was shot and killed Sunday, Oct. 25, in the 200 block of 46th Street NE. The Metropolitan Police Department is searching for a 16-year-old suspect believed to be armed with a handgun.

Officers responded around 8:36 a.m. and found the boy unconscious and not breathing with a gunshot wound, according to DC News Now. DC Fire and EMS transported him to a hospital, where he died after lifesaving efforts failed, MPD said.

Police have not released the victim's name or age.

Officers at the scene told WUSA9 they believe the suspect and victim knew each other. MPD has not formally confirmed that detail beyond the on-scene statement.

MPD described the suspect as a 16-year-old Black male, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 160 pounds, wearing black pajama pants. Police said he is armed with a handgun.

Homicide detectives are investigating.

WUSA9's crew at the scene observed distraught family members and neighbors gathered near the shooting site. 7News also reported the killing.

The department offers a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for any homicide in the District. As of Sunday afternoon, the victim did not yet appear on MPD's unsolved homicides page for 2026.

MPD's crime data, updated through Oct. 23, showed 82 homicides in D.C. so far in 2026, down 27% from 113 at the same point in 2025. Those preliminary figures may not yet reflect Sunday's killing.
