Shanell Holiday, 29, of Southeast D.C., was the pedestrian killed Sunday, Aug. 16, when a driver struck her in a crosswalk at North Capitol Street and New York Avenue NW and fled, the Metropolitan Police Department said.

As we reported Aug. 17, a woman died after being hit at the busy intersection that evening. MPD released Holiday's identity on Tuesday, Aug. 18, along with details about the suspect vehicle.

Third District officers responded around 6:48 p.m. Aug. 16 and found Holiday suffering from serious injuries, according to an MPD press release. D.C. Fire and EMS arrived but were unable to revive her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

What investigators found

MPD's preliminary investigation determined Holiday was walking north in the west crosswalk of New York Avenue at North Capitol Street. She was in the middle of the intersection when the traffic signal turned green for westbound traffic. As she continued crossing, a blue 2011 Subaru Legacy struck her, according to the MPD release.

The driver did not stop.

Police later found the Subaru unoccupied nearby, WJLA reported. No arrest has been announced, and the driver has not been publicly identified.

MPD's Major Crash Investigations Unit is leading the case. AlertDC, the city's emergency notification service, reported on Aug. 16 that all inbound and outbound lanes on New York Avenue at North Capitol Street NW were closed following the crash.

The intersection sits at the boundary of Northwest and Northeast D.C., near the NoMa and Sursum Corda neighborhoods. Fox 5 reported that Holiday died at the scene after officers found her with serious injuries.
