A man was shot and killed on the 5000 block of Benning Road SE on Monday, Aug. 17, and the Metropolitan Police Department is asking the public to help identify a black Acura four-door sedan seen in connection with the homicide.

MPD officers responded to the scene just after 2:30 p.m. and found a man with gunshot wounds who was unconscious and not breathing, according to DC News Now. The department confirmed the man had died in an update issued shortly before 4:20 p.m.

MPD said all lifesaving efforts failed before the victim was pronounced dead and the case was classified as a homicide, WJLA reported.

Washington photojournalist @KMNONSCENE, who covers breaking news across the D.C. region, posted from the scene on X at approximately 2:32 p.m. reporting a possible homicide investigation underway at the same block.

The department has not released the victim's name or age. MPD has not provided a suspect description beyond the vehicle, has not announced a press conference and has not identified a motive. The Acura is described as a four-door sedan with heavy window tint and a sunroof.

Benning Road SE was closed from H Street SE to Southern Avenue as of 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, while investigators processed the scene. MPD did not say when the road would reopen.

The shooting is unrelated to an Aug. 13 incident on the same block in which a Maryland National Capital Park Police officer was struck by a fleeing suspect's vehicle but not injured.
