A man was shot and three people were arrested Monday night in the 1900 block of 16th Street SE, a stretch of Anacostia that saw a fatal shooting just six weeks earlier.

Metropolitan Police Department officers responded around 8:35 p.m. on Aug. 24 and found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds, DC News Now reported. D.C. Fire and EMS transported him to a local hospital. He was conscious and breathing.

Officers arrested three people in connection with the shooting during the on-scene investigation. MPD had not released the suspects' identities or charges as of Monday night.

The block sits in Ward 8, three blocks south of Anacostia Senior High School. It is the same block where 37-year-old Delonta Phillips was shot and killed on July 10, according to MPD. That homicide remains unsolved, and police are offering up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

The night before, on Sunday, Aug. 23, a woman was shot in the 1900 block of 19th Place SE around 8:45 p.m. She was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to DC News Now.

The cluster of gun violence in Southeast comes as the District's gun assault numbers continue to climb. A Council on Criminal Justice report updated Aug. 11 found D.C.'s gun assault rate in the first half of 2026 was 13% higher than the same period in 2025, running counter to a national trend where nine comparable cities averaged a 6% decline. Homicides, meanwhile, fell 41% over the same stretch.

MPD crime data through Aug. 21 showed assaults with a dangerous weapon up 39% year-over-year to 790 cases citywide, even as homicides dropped 31% to 70, Hoodline reported.
