Gonzaga beat Archbishop Carroll 47-27 at Buchanan Field on Friday, Sept. 18, opening Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) play with its fourth straight win.
Quarterback Nick Ferrante and the Eagles' offense put up 47 points against a Carroll defense that had held Friendship Collegiate to 24 in the season opener. The victory kept Gonzaga unbeaten at 4-0 through four weeks, with earlier wins over Calvert Hall of Baltimore and D.C. public school opponents Coolidge and Eastern.
The game was the first conference contest of the season for both teams.
DCSportsFan's Week 4 rankings, published Saturday, Sept. 19, slot Gonzaga at No. 2 in D.C. with a 99.5 rating and a plus-72 point differential through four games. St. John's College High School holds the top spot, also 4-0, with a 99.7 rating. DeMatha sits third at 3-1.
Gonzaga and St. John's are the only unbeaten WCAC programs through Week 4.
Archbishop Carroll, ranked No. 7 in D.C. entering the game according to the Washington Informer, opened its season with a 24-6 loss to Friendship Collegiate before picking up a win over KIPP DC Legacy Prep. The Lions could not keep pace with Gonzaga's offense in the WCAC opener.
Head coach Kevin Holmes told the Informer after the game that Archbishop Carroll challenged his team and that Gonzaga could not afford to relax at any point against a squad that wanted the same result.
The Eagles travel to Benedictine College Prep in Richmond on Friday, Sept. 25, per MaxPreps. After that, Gonzaga hosts Malvern Prep on Oct. 2 before a stretch of WCAC games, including a home date on Oct. 10 and a road trip on Oct. 23. The marquee matchup sits at the end of the regular season: Gonzaga and St. John's meet Nov. 7.
