Georgetown's C&O Canal gets a block party Sunday, Oct. 11, when Georgetown Heritage hosts its second annual Canal Day at the Mule Yard and Lock 3.

The free celebration runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1057 Thomas Jefferson St. NW, an hour longer than last year's inaugural event, according to the Georgetowner. Families can expect a canal boat regatta, pumpkin decorating, woodworking with Zenith Community Arts and lawn games.

Two live acts anchor the main stage: bluegrass band Hollertown and children's music group Jam with Jamie. NTB Group – Washington Fine Properties is presenting the stage.

The animals steal the show. Kids and adults alike can meet Lucy the Donkey and Kismet the Mule, a meet-and-greet presented by Martin's Tavern. The pair are a nod to the mules that once pulled cargo boats along the canal.

Complimentary snacks come from Maman, Say Cheese and il Canale. Alejandro's Tacos, Rocklands Barbeque, Preppy Pretzels, Say Cheese and The Graham will sell food and drinks on site.

Samantha Ring and Rachael Burnett are co-chairing the event.

Georgetown Heritage, which brought canal boat tours back to Georgetown in 2022 after an 11-year gap, says the boat is on hiatus while the National Park Service repairs the canal's locks and walls. The nonprofit expects tours to relaunch in spring 2027, according to its website.
