MPD's bomb squad found nothing hazardous after investigating a suspicious device left at the Engine 20 firehouse on Wisconsin Avenue NW Wednesday morning, ending an hours-long response that shut down a busy stretch of the Tenleytown corridor.

Officers responded to the DC Fire & EMS station in the 4300 block of Wisconsin Avenue around 7 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, according to 7News/WJLA. The bomb squad was called in and ultimately determined the device posed no threat. The scene was cleared.

The District's emergency alert system, AlertDC, issued a road closure notice at 7:52 a.m. citing "police activity." The closures covered the 4200-4300 blocks of Wisconsin Avenue NW, between Van Ness and Yuma streets, and the 4200 block of 40th Street NW, between Wisconsin Avenue and Warren Street.

Impact on the corridor

The shutdown snarled traffic through the commercial heart of Tenleytown and AU Park, a dense residential and retail stretch near American University. Engine 20's firehouse sits squarely in the middle of the closed zone, surrounded by shops, restaurants and bus stops that serve thousands of commuters daily.

A reader report on PoPville described 20 to 30 empty Metro buses stacked along Wisconsin Avenue while police and fire apparatus blocked intersections between Veazey and Yuma streets. That observation has not been confirmed by WMATA or MPD.

Fox 5 DC confirmed the scene was cleared Wednesday, though WJLA's reporting was still being updated as of 1:47 p.m., and it remained unclear whether all road closures had been fully lifted by that time.

What MPD has not said

MPD has not identified who left the device at the firehouse or released further details about the investigation. No arrests have been reported. The department did not issue a formal press release Wednesday.
