A person has been charged with arson after investigators determined a Thursday, Aug. 6 apartment fire at 3500 Minnesota Ave. SE was deliberately set, the D.C. Fire and EMS Arson Investigation Unit said.

The fire broke out on the third floor of a three-story apartment building in Southeast Washington and spread to the cockloft, the narrow space between the top-floor ceiling and the roof deck. Flames also reached adjoining apartments, causing what authorities described as minor damage.

No injuries were reported.

D.C. Fire and EMS crews responded to a box alarm at the 3500 block of Minnesota Avenue SE and found fire showing from a third-floor unit upon arrival, the department posted on X on Monday, Aug. 10. Firefighters extinguished the blaze while minimizing damage to adjacent apartments.

The D.C. Fire and EMS Department said in a follow-up post on X that a person of interest was stopped and detained by the Metropolitan Police Department during suppression efforts while the Arson Investigation Unit examined the scene. That investigation led to the arson charge, WJLA reported Monday.

The suspect's name and additional details about the arrest have not been released publicly, according to WJLA.

The Minnesota Avenue fire is a separate incident from a two-alarm blaze in the 5300 block of E Street SE on Aug. 4 that displaced 44 residents. The cause of that fire remains under investigation.
